June, 11 2018 – Zambia Off-grid Investor Forum 2018 will take place in Lusaka on the 12th and 13th June.
The Forum, organized by the Alliance for Rural Electrifcation (ARE) and GOGLA, convenes developers, financiers, regulators and international development partners to build partnerships around off-grid energy solutions in Zambia.
Presentations by international experts will inform about the latest developments and opportunities in Zambia’s off-grid market as well as introducing various upcoming international support programs.
We will have the chance to present our activity in Zambia during Session I: Zambia Off-grid Energy Markets where Claudio Pedretti, our Business Development Manager will share the floor with other distinguished panellists.
In parallel with the Zambia Off-Grid Investor Forum 2018, ARE and GOGLA will organise an exhibition to give the private sector companies and investors, as well other stakeholders in the off-grid energy sector an opportunity to showcase products/projects and expertise. Windkinetic Off-grid Power Systems has just commissioned the first of a series of standalone renewable energy trailers. This system has been sold and installed by our regional dealer in Central Asia: Avencom.
The trailer supplies continuous and reliable electrical energy to the emergency communication and video surveillance system in the Aktogay mine, in an extremely challenging environment with temperatures from -40°C to +50°C, dust, and mud.
Windkinetic designed and engineered the system to operate in these harsh conditions without downtime.
The system consists of a customized off-road trailer with a special structure and a telescopic tower. The system includes one Windkinetic Magellano 500 W wind turbine and 2 solar arrays (1000 W total). A diesel generator is installed as a back-up.
The wind turbine is on top of a stainless steel telescopic mast, where Siemens Wimax devices are also installed. The solar panels are mounted on the side and on the top of the trailer structure, to be easily and safely oriented.
The trailer chassis has 2 separated compartments. All the charging electronics are inside the first one, as well as the battery bank and the telecom devices. The genset, diesel heater and fuel tank are in the second compartment.
The compartments are thermally controlled both at low temperatures by the diesel heater and at high temperatures by cooling fans.
The entire system can be installed and be operational in less than 1 hour.
The evaluation of the state of health of the system is performed by a remote monitoring and control system.
This power trailer system is designed to minimize the downtime and is intended to be used in extremely demanding applications, such as telecommunication, mining, oil&gas, disaster relief and everywhere there is a need of a reliable yet easy deployable source of power.
We have just commissioned our first system for a national power transmission line in France: Réseau de Transport d’Electricité (RTE)
The objective of the system is to supply energy to a monitoring system developed and owned by Micca, our Austrian distributor. The station collects data about the physical conditions of the power conductors in real time.
The collected data allow the line operator to significantly improve the management of the energy delivered through the lines. In particular, they are able to maximize the current flowing through the conductors, by exceeding the nominal current allowed by the original design. The current is limited only when the system observes an actual overload of the lines and immediately communicates to the base power station to decrease it. This translates into a considerable resource saving and increased efficiency.
This task is critical, because a failure of the monitoring system would result in a major loss of money. Therefore, also the power supplied to the monitoring station needs to be highly reliable.
For this reason, we designed a power system to operate with zero downtime, delivering constant and reliable energy to the monitoring devices.
The system consists of an industrial wind turbine, a solar panel and the electronics, includes all the charging devices, a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery bank and a 3G remote monitoring and control system. The monitoring system allows the operator to check all the parameters of the power system and to receive alarms if any value deviates from a specified range. In this way, the maintenance is switched from a reactive to proactive approach, which is more suitable for such demanding applications.
We are looking forward to further contributing to improve the management of the transmission lines of France and other European TCOs, to boost the efficiency of their grids through a better energy management from the generation sites to the end users.

Next 22 May, we will attend the event “Building the future of energy with startups from Philippines“, the first Enrupt Energy Innervation Talk.
The topic is the Philippines government support in the deployment of renewables and fast tracking of off-grid and micro-grid projects.

We spent an intense week traveling through Zambia and holding tens of meetings with institutions, NGOs, and private customers in order to accelerate the deployment of our solar/wind off-grid power systems into the country.
Two strategic partnership were finalized with key Zambian rural electrification pioneers: EDI (Energy Diverse Integrations, Ltd) and Kafyta Cooperative. Both are already running rural microgrid systems in the Northern regions of the country.
We are so excited to join forces with our Zambian colleagues; our technology tied up with their market knowledge and experience will allow us to bring to rural populations the clean energy and the services they deserve.

Non è difficile capire il perché di tanto entusiasmo intorno alle batterie di accumulo solari. Con prezzi in continua diminuzione e performance via via migliori, sempre più aziende stanno valutando come le batterie di accumulo possano ridurre il costo delle bollette dell’elettricità, soprattutto se sono istallate con impianti solari.
Le batterie di accumulo solare
La maggior parte delle batterie di accumulo di larga scala utilizza tecnologia agli ioni di litio e può variare in dimensione, in ragione della potenza necessaria. Queste batterie possono essere ricaricate (dall’energia prodotta dai pannelli solari), accumulare energia e scaricarla, quando si rende necessario.
Una tecnologia sempre più diffusa e promettente è quella ai fosfati di Litio (LiFePO4), acquistabile anche presso wind-kinetic.com, specialista in sistemi di storage e impianti off-grid.
Benefici economici dei sistemi di accumulo
Ogni azienda paga ai distributori di rete l’energia che consuma (misurata in chilowatt ora) oltre ad una serie di costi fissi e accise legati al contratto in essere. Questo significa che le bollette sono spesso molto più alte rispetto a quanto corrisponderebbe l’energia effettivamente consumata.
Con fonti energetiche alterative, come l’energia solare, si possono ridurre questi costi, grazie al fatto che le batterie riescono a fornire l’energia che accumulano, anche nei periodi nei quali è più necessaria.
Come funzionano le batterie di accumulo su impianti solari?
Diamo uno sguardo ai carichi tipici di un cliente commerciale, il quale utilizza maggiore energia durante il giorno.
Nel caso raffigurato nell’immagine che segue, il consumatore non utilizza pannelli solari o batterie di accumulo per diminuire i costi dell’utilizzo dell’energia.
Ora vediamo cosa accade se si aggiunge un impianto solare. L’energia solare contribuisce a ridurre significativamente la quantità dei Chilowatt ora necessari nei momenti di maggior consumo della giornata.
Come si può facilmente notare dall’area arancione del grafico, l’energia prodotta dal sole è maggiore tra le 7 e le 17. Tale contributo energetico riduce in maniera importante i chilowatt acquistati dalla rete elettrica durante quella fascia oraria.
Ma cosa succede durante le altre ore del giorno?
L’area azzurra mostra come le batterie sono ricaricate durante la prima parte della giornata (produzione solare > consumi), quella blu mostra come questa energia accumulata nelle batterie venga utilizzata nelle ore successive per ridurre i picchi di domanda di energia dalla rete. Si può così facilmente dedurre che dove i costi orari dei chilowatt sono molto alti, la riduzione di 100-200kW richiesti si traduce in un risparmio sostanziale, facendo delle batterie di accumulo solari una soluzione efficiente e conveniente.

WindKinetic is thrilled to have been chosen to work with the Sorbonne. The Sorbonne, as one of the world’s leading Universities, is famous for its multidisciplinary research, as well as its quest for knowledge and excellence, in fields ranging from humanities to science, medicine, technology, business and economics.
The foundation of our partnership is to initially supply an integrated micro renewable energy and monitoring system for use in the third year course of Océan, Atmosphère et Energie Renouvelable (Ocean, Atmosphere and Renewable Energy), under the leadership of Professor Wilson.
The integrated system consists of a vertical axis wind turbine and solar panel combined with our hybrid wind/solar charger and battery bank to support the remote monitoring and control system.
The objective of this particular integrated system is for the students to gather real time environmental data. Hence, critical to the success of the work was the solution provided by WindKinetic; and that the Remote Monitoring and Control System is supplied unprogrammed to provide the students with the facility to set all the parameters they need, enabling analysis assisted by WindKinetic.
The Remote Monitoring and Control System consists of a SCADA board and a software that when programmed, allow to measure Energy production and up to 8 Environmental parameters such as wind speed, temperature, battery voltage and others, in order to have a real time overview of the system in which it is deployed.
